ABOUT
ABOUT
The first and only NGO dialysis centre in Perlis, Malaysia
The Pusat Dialisis Tuanku Syed Putra – NKF was officially opened on 19 May 2007 by DYMM Tuanku Raja Perlis Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail. It was the realization of a dream that the beloved late YMM Tuanku Raja Perempuan Besar Perlis, Tengku Hajah Budriah binti Almarhum Tengku Ismail, had of setting up a dialysis centre for her ‘rakyat’. It is the first and only NGO dialysis centre in Perlis.
The late Raja Perlis had to undergo dialysis treatment during the last three years of his life. Many of his treatments were done in Kuala Lumpur because facilities for haemodialysis in Perlis were so limited. After watching how kidney dialysis dramatically improved the quality of Tuanku’s last few years of life, the late Raja Perempuan Besar Perlis made a vow that it was going to be her aim to help improve the lives of those with end stage renal failure. She said, “Knowing how crucial dialysis treatment is for patients with renal failure, I would like to make it possible for his people to benefit from similar facilities closer to home”.
The Pusat Dialisis Tuanku Syed Putra – NKF provided the people of Perlis with its first NGO dialysis centre. Prior to this some of the patients not treated at the Kangar General Hospital had to travel to other towns like Jitra or Sungei Petani. Furthermore, according to the late Raja Perempuan Besar Perlis, at that time, the queue for those seeking dialysis treatments at Kangar General Hopital was so long that some patients did not live long enough to get on the treatment programme.
It began with a dream and six years later the dream was fulfilled in 2007. Today the Pusat Dialisis Tuanku Syed Putra – NKF continues to provide the medical facility for chronic renal patients in Perlis irrespective of race or religion; and to provide assistance for those who are unable to afford the treatment cost.

Collaboration with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Malaysia
The first step towards making this dream a reality was the signing of an Agreement with the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (“NKF”), whereby the NKF would undertake the operation of the Pusat Dialisis Tuanku Syed Putra - NKF, once the Centre was ready. The NKF gave invaluable assistance in planning the Centre, making it its first purpose-built dialysis centre in Malaysia. A major fundraising charity dinner was then organized by the family of the late Raja Perempuan Besar Perlis, named ‘Malam Impian Ratu’, which was held in April 2004 and further sustained through, ‘Malam Impian Ratu II’, ‘Malam Impian Ratu III’ and ‘A Malaysian Story’ in conjunction with SheikhaHub, held in 2009, 2012 and 2014 respectively. Through the kind generosity of many corporations, individuals, family and friends, the charity dinner successfully raised the funds necessary to build and fully equip the dialysis centre. The Pusat Dialisis Tuanku Syed Putra – NKF provided the people of Perlis with its first NGO dialysis centre. Subsidised fee for very low income patients
The Dialysis Centre today has 50 patients, with many more on the waiting list. The Centre is equipped with 16 dialysis machines. The normal payment for each haemodialysis treatment is RM110 but for those who cannot afford this, a subsidized minimal fee of RM50 is requested. There are also a number of patients with very low income and with no means to pay the RM50 per treatment. For these needy patients, they receive financial aid to assist them with treatment. This is done through a special Patient Welfare fund set up by the Pusat Dialisis Tuanku Syed Putra. 4 hour treatments, 3 days a week for the rest of patient's lives
Many patients’ lives have been completely altered by the Pusat Dialisis Tuanku Syed Putra. One lady describes how she was always vomiting and constantly lethargic. Once she started receiving treatment at the centre, she described herself as feeling alive again. Another elderly man described how he used to wake up in the early hours of the morning to travel all the way to Jitra. He would then undergo haemodialysis for three hours. By the time the haemodialysis finished, the gentleman had to stay over at a relative’s home and then return to Kangar the next day. He would have to do this three times a week. This was not only physically exhausting for the poor gentleman but was also very costly.
